Description[]
This is the ability to supernaturally assume the form of an animal and/or a Werebeast.
Uses/Applications (Pros)[]
One with this ability could psychically assume the form of a given animal, often via the power of the full moon. In addition, one could psychically assume the anthropomorphic form of a given animal, often via the power of the full moon. Furthermore, one could perhaps psychically assume traits of the given animal, at will. One could also psychically assume a form that combines traits from various breeds of a given animal, at will. One could even transmit this supernatural ability by a bite, a scratch or the like, at will.
Weaknesses/Limitations (Cons)[]
While not necessarily guaranteed, most Therianthropes are turned into their werebeast state by the full moon's supernatural influence. Some turn fully into an animal, while others turn into a state that combines the best of human and animal traits, though it almost always involuntary, and dependent on the full moon's presence.
Though, interestingly, whether the user must be able to actually see the moon in order to change, seems to vary from user to user. Also, while rare (and, presumably, extremely difficult), there are cases noted, in which some Therianthropes have demonstrated the ability to either change in the absence of the moon or resist changing despite the presence of the moon.
Moreover, there are a number of ways people may be changed into Therianthropes. Foremost is a bite or scratch from another Therianthrope. Some forge pacts with dark forces. Some practice witchcraft, sorcery or the like. Some are cursed by magic, divinities or other supernatural forces (some belief systems claim that drinking rainwater from the footprint of a werecreature would do the trick). Some are merely born as Therianthropes from being "the seventh son of a seventh son". And numerous other means besides these may be used.
Once the change has been made, a Therianthrope also has to contend with a number of ways in which they can be harmed or killed. They have a particular weakness to silver, perhaps certain plants (ie wolfsbane, moly), as well as perhaps exorcism and, most notably, the power of the sun (which commonly changes a Therianthrope to their less powerful human form).
Similar/Related Abilities[]
- Animal Communication- Therianthropes are often able to communicate with their totem animal (ie werewolf communicates with wolves, etc) or their totem animal class (ie werecat communicates with felines, etc).
- Animal Form- One of a number of traits that distinguishes Therianthropy from this more common power, is the fact that Therianthropes are able to transmit their condition via a bite, scratch or the like.
- Conversion- Therianthropes are able to convert victims of their bites, scratches, etc, into members of the same superhuman class (ie werewolves can convert others into werewolves).
- Lunar Mind- The influence of the moon may not just change the user's body, but also the mind.
- Therianthropy is an ability that comes in a wide array of species variations.
